Invisalign has been around for quite a while, but it is still growing in popularity as dental patients seek to address orthodontic or cosmetic concerns. While you may know of this treatment, you are not likely to see it around too often. Why? Because it is virtually invisible.
What is Invisalign? How exactly does it work? Let’s talk about it.
What is Invisalign?
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign straightens teeth and treats mild to moderate orthodontic issues using soft, clear, removable aligners. It is a discrete form of treatment that can benefit teens and adults alike.
Using 3D imaging, dentists can see the current position of teeth and the desired outcome — mapping out a pathway to get from start to finish. This imaging is then used to create a series of aligners personally designed for each patient to help achieve the most successful treatment results.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Aligners are designed to encourage the teeth to move toward their new position. They are each worn for about one week – or for a specific amount of time as designated by your dentist. When that time is up, the aligner is removed and replaced with the next one in the series.
These aligners work to transform smiles. A few routine appointments throughout treatment will allow your dentist to ensure that everything is moving along as it should.
One of the most enticing parts of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable. However, for the treatment to be effective – and stay on track — the aligners have to be on the teeth. It is recommended that they be worn for at least 22 hours every single day, only being removed when eating or brushing your teeth.
What Is Invisalign Used to Treat?
Invisalign can be used to treat mild to moderate orthodontic issues, including:
- Crooked teeth
- Overcrowded teeth
- Underbite
- Overbite
- Crossbite
- Open bite
- Gaps between teeth
For those patients who require more in-depth, complex treatment, dentists and orthodontists may recommend an alternative option.
How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Last?
Despite all its positive attributes, Invisalign treatment is not something that can correct dental issues overnight. Rather, it takes time. And just how long Invisalign treatment lasts will depend on a couple of different factors.
The extent of treatment. The timeframe for Invisalign treatment directly correlates with how complex the treatment need is. For instance, minor gaps and overcrowding can be adjusted pretty quickly whereas more serious issues will take longer.
On average, Invisalign treatment can last anywhere from 6 months to 18 months. The number of aligners you have in your series can be a good indication of how long you will undergo treatment.
Age of patient. It is much easier for younger patients to encourage teeth to move. Teens will often complete treatment faster than adults.
Compliance with treatment. As mentioned above, the aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours every single day for successful treatment. Not wearing them can cause a delay or failure altogether.
