You know that dental implants are the best option for artificial tooth replacement. Of course, you also know that they can take months to be securely placed and able to fully function. Why? Because dental implants fuse with the jaw bone in order to create a strong anchor to hold the tooth in place.

Waiting for this to happen may take a while, but it is what makes them work so well — much like a natural tooth.

As technology has advanced, new procedures are available, allowing dentists to offer same-day dental implants. Not everyone is a candidate, but for those who are, this can be a game changer.

Let’s take a closer look at how dental implants can be done in one day.

Getting Traditional vs. Same-Day Dental Implants

As mentioned, traditional implants take a while — especially if extractions, bone grafting, or a sinus lift are needed. Sometimes healing from these procedures needs to occur before the implants can be placed. And, once they are, you will wait as the osseointegration or fusion process happens between the implant and jaw bone. The final appointment will include attaching a permanent dental crown to the abutment and implant.

There are many appointments and lots of time to pass. In fact, you can expect a traditional implant to take at least a few months to be fully complete — which is often long enough to deter some patients.

So, what is it like getting same-day dental implants? Is it really possible? Believe it or not, you may be able to get them in a day – even if you require an extraction, too.

It is important to note that there will be consultations and appointments in preparation for the big day. And, during the procedure, a temporary dental crown is placed —- requiring you to return a couple of months later for a permanent restoration. While the dental implant and temporary crown can be placed in a single visit so that you aren’t left with an empty space, the entire process does take time.

Are You a Candidate for Same-Day Dental Implants?

A candidate for same-day dental implants should be:

  • A non-smoker
  • In good oral health
  • Have a good oral hygiene routine
  • In good overall health
  • Has sufficient jaw bone density

Most dentists prefer traditional implants as they are more secure and offer greater success. Because same-day dental implants don’t allow for the extra time to fuse with the bone, they have a greater risk of failure. As a result, dentists are selective in their candidates for this treatment.

The best way to find out if you are a candidate for same–day dental implants, traditional implants, or another alternative altogether is to talk to your dental team.

At Creekview Dental, we offer both types of dental implants to our patients, giving them every option for optimal oral health.
